  • a population of over 139,000 residents dispersed among 105 settlements
  • consists only of rural settlements with no towns
  • a prosperous area with high levels of economic activity and low levels of unemployment; but with increasing house prices and a shortage of affordable homes
  • a healthy area, with high life expectancy compared with national rates
  • an area with the lowest crime rate in Cambridgeshire

As well as regular meetings of the Council, SCDC operates a leader and cabinet system of decision-making. There is a Scrutiny & Overview Committee, a Corporate Governance Committee and a Standards Committee, and a number of regulatory committees, including the Planning Committee and the Licensing Committee.

The Council is served by Council staff who carry out the decisions made by the Council. The organisation is managed by the Chief Executive and two Executive Directors (Corporate Services and Operational Services), supported by four Corporate Managers.
