This report has been produced to inform any individual, organisation or service provider on the process and outcomes of the Northstowe workshop held at the Cambourne Service Providers' meeting on Monday, 11th December 2006.

Consultation with young people, March 2006

In March 2006 Shape Cambridge, (The Architecture and Built Environment Centre for Cambridge and the East Regions) carried out a period of public consultation with young people on behalf of South Cambridgeshire District Council (SCDC). The consultation process was carried out as part of the early community engagement work for the new town development of Northstowe. Over 100 young people aged between 14 and 18 took part in the Northstowe young people's consultation, the results of which are recorded here.

The overall aim of the consultation was to:

  • start to engage young people in planning for Northstowe
  • determine what is important to young people and what they feel is important for others
  • gather specific comment, information and views

SCDC decided that the process would involve three colleges, two with close geographical links to the Northstowe site and one where the pupils had experience of an urban environment. These were:

  • Swavesey Village College (Young people aged 14)
  • Cottenham Village College (Young people aged 14)
  • Manor Community College, North Cambridge (Young people aged 14 -15)

In addition to the schools consultation, ten young people who are not in employment, education or training ('N.E.E.T's) took part in consultation workshops at a youth club in Bar Hill.
