Fear of Crime

Thank you to residents who responded to our fear of crime survey in the spring edition of the South Cambridgeshire magazine 2010. We were pleased to learn that the vast majority of you feel safe in your local area both during the day and after dark. The results are helping us to provide you with relevant information, including the South Cambridgeshire crime rates:

Total crime in 2009/10 is down by 11.9% from 2008/09. This is a reduction of two crimes per day.

On a typical day in South Cambridgeshire the crimes committed include:
- 1 or 2 domestic burglaries
- 2 or 3 assaults, one of which will result in injury to the victim.
- 3 cases of criminal damage
- 8 thefts, of which 2 are from vehicles

We detect 3 of the 16 crimes committed on a typical day.

Approximately two thirds of survey respondents said that the information we make available helps them feel informed about crime levels and knowledgeable as to how to reduce the likelihood of becoming a victim. Halloween for example, is traditionally a night of fun and frolics, but it can be a frightening and intimidating experience for some members of our community. Those not wishing to take part can display a 'no trick or treat' poster; available to download or by calling 03450 450 500.
